In preparation for a trip to Barcelona, many tourists will take a moment to learn a few words of Spanish.   It is important to note however that the Catalan language is widely spoken in Barcelona.  

Fortunately, learning some basic Catalan is relatively straightforward as it includes many elements of the French, Spanish and Italian vocabulary.
